Market Headlines

Beef

Buyers cannot replace inventory at steady prices. Packers are shorting orders across the country. Beef looks to continue to have inflationary pressures for the foreseeable future.

Turkey

Turkey supply remains very tight across the complex. Whole bird and Ready to Cook Turkey breasts are in high demand and are hard to find if you haven’t booked your holiday needs.

Dairy

Shell egg markets are mixed. Jumbo is flat, Extra Large and Large are down, Medium at up. California eggs are flat, Medium eggs are up. The Block market is down. Butter is down. Cream remains readily available.

Grains / Oil

Crop estimates have had the most impact on the soybean complex. ProFarmer released its estimates, and while there will be no shortage of beans this coming year, their estimates were not as good as previously expected. This helped drive palm prices higher by week’s end.

Produce Market Updates

Vegetables

Asparagus

Supplies are improving but not enough to fill the pipeline yet. Markets are slightly lower. Will see better production and product next week.

Bell Peppers

East – Green supplies steady, quality and demand is good, and the market is up. Red and Yellow limited supplies, fair to good quality, strong demand and the market is steady to up.

West – Green supply and quality are good, market lower. Red supplies are better, yellow limited.

Broccoli

Market is higher, supplies tighten up a bit as growers are dealing with some insect pressure, however it is expected to keep up with demand. Quality is good.

Cauliflower

Market is steady to a bit lower with supplies keeping up with demand this week. Quality reported as good.

Celery

Market is steady with good supplies and steady demand. Quality is reported as good to very good.

Cilantro/ Parsley

Market on parsley and cilantro is steady with good supplies. Quality reported as good on both.

Lettuce Iceberg

Market remains active but is down a bit, as yields remain under budget. Lower production and active markets expected for several weeks. Quality is reported as good.

Lettuce Romaine

Market on romaine is steady, and hearts remain elevated but mostly steady on strong demand and fair to good supply. Quality is fair to good for both.

Long English Cucumbers

Supplies are starting to improve but growers are still struggling to meet demand. Expecting better
production to start in the coming weeks.

Onions

Yellow, red and white supplies are good. Idaho and Washington harvest continues. California will pack thru September. Quality is good in all areas. Prices are slightly lower in the Northwest, and mostly steady in California.

Potatoes – Russets

Market is experiencing the typical “Harvest Market” decline this week in Idaho. Expecting it to continue for another couple of weeks as pack–outs and early volume is good. Washington market is mostly steady.

Squash

East – Zucchini supply good, quality good, demand good and the market increasing. Yellow supplies are good, quality good, demand good and the market steady to higher.

West – Markets are slightly higher due to declining production which is still adequate to meet demand.

Tomatoes

Markets (round, Roma, grape, & cherry) continue to improve with increasing availability both east and west. Quality is also improving but can vary amongst shippers.

 

Fruit

Avocado

Mexico – Supplies are good, quality and demand is good, and market is steady to lower. 32s/36s limited supplies, 60s are abundant and #2’s are very tight as the Loca Crop is very clean. California – supplies good and market steady. 32s/36s and 70 ct limited, supplies better on other sizes.

Citrus

Lemons – Supplies are tight; quality is fair to good, demand is strong, and the market is increasing. Industry waiting on imports to arrive in large quantities. Smaller sizes are tightening up.

Oranges – Supplies good on 72s & larger, tight on 88s & smaller, quality is fair to good, demand is strong, and the market is increasing.

Limes – Supplies are good, quality fair to good, demand good and the market is steady to increasing. Import volumes into the U.S. are steadily declining. A limited amount of new crop fruit has begun to arrive, primarily in smaller sizes (275/250 count).

Grapes

All grapes in great supply and very nice quality. Expecting that to continue for weeks to come.

Pineapple

Supplies tight. quality fair to good, demand strong, and the market is increasing. Pineapple volume has started to decrease and will continue until Labor Day.

Strawberries

Supplies are starting to decline. Demand is stronger. Quality and sizing varies due to warmer temps and morning dew. Market is increasing. Demand exceeding supplies is expected in two weeks.
