Market Headlines

Beef

The prime grade came in at an all-time high of 13.34% last week. The high prices of the past couple months, paired with the strong
current grade is making moving all these prime boxes a growing challenge for the packers.

Turkey

Turkey supply remains very tight across the complex. Whole bird and Ready to Cook Turkey breasts are in high demand and are hard to find if you haven’t booked your holiday needs.

Dairy

Jumbo and Extra-Large shell eggs are up, Large are up and Medium are up. California – Jumbo and Extra Large shell eggs are up, Large shell eggs are up, and Medium are up. The Block market is up, and the Butter market is up. Cream remains readily available.

Grains / Oil

Soybean oil futures were volatile. The market remains sensitive to global trade and upcoming tariff and biofuel policy signals. Canola futures were rangebound but firm early in the week, supported by spillover strength from soy oil and global vegetable oil tightness.

Produce Market Updates

Vegetables

Asparagus

No significant changes expected for next week. Holiday pull in action and supplies east and west remain steady. Jumbo and Extra Large remain short, keeping those sizes higher in the market pricing, all other sizing adjusting lower for both coasts.

Bell Peppers

East – Green supplies steady, quality is good, demand is good, and the market is steady to higher; red and yellow supplies tight. quality fair to good, demand good, market higher. West – limited volume and frost in the east has west markets elevated. Colored peppers very short

Broccoli

Market is elevated and active as supplies are lighter from various regions. Quality is fair to good.

Cauliflower

Market is still elevated, and supplies are expected to be light this week and into next, while quality continues to be fair to good.

Celery

Market is higher as supplies are lower from quality issues and increased demand. Yields are declining and is expected to continue to trend lower for several weeks.

Cilantro/ Parsley

Market on parsley is steady, and cilantro is a bit lower with better supplies. Quality reported as fair to good on both.

Lettuce Iceberg

Market is active as weights and yields continue to be low keeping supplies very short. Quality is fair.

Lettuce Romaine

Market softer but remains very elevated. Quality and weather continues to impact yields on romaine and hearts. Market to remain active for several weeks.

Onions

Yellow, red and white supplies are good. Quality in Idaho and Washington is good. The outlook is for good availability all season. Demand is slightly better due to exports into Asia. Prices are steady.

Potatoes – Russets

Supplies are good on all sizes across the board. Sizing is very large. The outlook is for good availability all season. Quality is good. Prices are steady.

Snap and Snow Peas

Steady demand and markets higher as production is under budget the next two weeks due to early rains. Quality reported as fair for both.

Squash

East – Zucchini and yellow supplies tight, quality good, demand good, market higher. West-Limited volume on yellow with increased pricing, green is steady, demand is good for all. Quality is fair on green and poor on yellow. Better quality and supply expected in two weeks.

Tomatoes

Eastern round tomato supply remains steady and mostly larger sizing as cool weather has slowed some harvesting. Roma and grape markets are on alert as availability has lightened up. Mexico continues to help supplies. The tomato category has a stronger feel to it.

 

Fruit

Avocado

Mexico supplies are plentiful, quality, demand is good, and the market remains stable with continued strong harvest. Size curve shows a balanced distribution and favorable supply. California limited supplies for the next 3-4 weeks to finish the season.

Citrus

Lemons- Supplies good, quality good to excellent, demand good and market is steady to higher. District 3 and District 1 are ramping up. The size profiles are complimenting each other to allow for availability across the board. Rain could tighten up supply. Oranges- Supplies have tightened up due to rain, quality is good to excellent, demand is good, and the market is steady. Navels are in full swing with sizing peaking on 88/113/72. Lead time needed to fill orders.
Limes- Supplies good, quality fair to good, demand god, and the market is steady to higher. Expect pricing to remain firm as supplies tighten from both increased demand and the end of the current crop cycle. Sizing continues to trend large.

Grapes

Recent storms have all but ended the fresh California grape season. Those grapes harvested will last until the offshore starts, but from now until mid January we will see higher prices and quality progressively falling off.

Melons

Cantaloupe Melons contending with weather and delayed vessels causing a somewhat rocky start to the import season. Fruit is smaller than anticipated, internal quality is good with a slight green cast. Honeydew Import is slow to start, quality is very good with good sugar content. Sizing is larger.

Strawberries

Heavy rain has come and gone from California and left a lot of damage in its wake. Harvest will resume until next week. Texas and Florida are shipping less than forecasted volume.Quality is fair to good. Markets are higher.
