Market Headlines

Beef

Holiday rib and tender orders are forcing packers to continue to run despite greater than $200/head losses.

 

Turkey

Turkey supply remains very tight across the complex. Whole bird and Ready to Cook Turkey breasts are in high demand and are hard to find if you haven’t booked your holiday needs.

Dairy

Jumbo, extra-large, Large, and Medium Shell eggs are flat with no change from last week. California Jumbo, extra-large, large shell eggs are up, and medium shell eggs are flat with no change from last week. The Block market is down, and the Butter market is down. Cream remains readily available.

Grains / Oil

Soybean oil futures ended slightly lower last week. Canola oil moved higher last week. Seed futures moved lower as harvest is moving nicely. Weather and other conditions have been favorable. Palm oil moved lower. Production in Indonesia was reportedly a record high.

Produce Market Updates

Vegetables

Asparagus

Intermittent rains in Mexico, has cut back on harvest time, heavy to Standard and small, Large/XL/Jumbo are limited. Peruvian is increasing in volume, so will help offset west shortage somewhat. Markets are higher on both coasts.

Bell Peppers

East – Green supplies are good, quality good, demand good, and market increasing. Red and yellow supplies are good, quality good, demand good, market steady to slightly higher. West – Green supply is limited; significant rainfall is hampering harvest for color as well. Markets are higher for both.

Broccoli

Market is up with high demand and lower yields impacted with fluctuating temperatures and poor to fair quality. Short supply expected for several weeks.

Cauliflower

Market much stronger and looks to hold at higher priced levels. Supplies are expected to be light this week and next. Quality continues to be fair with a lot of insect pressure

Celery

Market is mostly steady as supplies are currently meeting the increased demand, but not much extra and with rain impacting harvest could see it climb. Quality is reported as fair to good.

Cilantro/ Parsley

Market on parsley is steady, and cilantro is mostly steady with fair supplies. Quality reported as good on both.

Lettuce Iceberg

Market very strong, with erratic weather and quality from fair to poor depending on growing location in the Salinas Valley. Supplies expected to be short and market active for several weeks.

Lettuce Romaine

Market very active and up significantly. Quality and weather continues to impact yields on romaine and hearts. Market to remain active for the next few weeks.

Mushrooms

Supplies all varieties of mushrooms are adequate from most suppliers but have the potential for intermittent gaps in production due to inconsistent yields from new compost.

Onions

Yellow, red and white supplies are good. Idaho and Washington harvest continues. Quality is good in both areas. The outlook is for good availability all season. Prices have stabilized.

Potatoes – Russets

Supplies are good on all sizes across the board. Sizing is very large. The outlook is for good availability all season. With the harvest completed pricing will stabilize. Quality is good. Prices have stabilized.

Squash

East – Zucchini supplies tight, quality and demand good, market increasing. Yellow supplies are steady, quality and demand good, market increasing. West-lighter supplies on zucchini, yellow steady harvest. Markets are active due to curtailed harvest for weather events.

Tomatoes

California harvest has concluded, which will lead to reduced overall availability. In the East, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia are wrapping up their seasons and beginning the transition to Florida and South Georgia. During this transition period, availability will be limited

 

Fruit

Avocado

Mexico supplies and quality are good, with strong demand and a steady to higher market; 32s/36s are limited, 48s are short, and rain is impacting conditions this week. California supplies are tight, but quality and demand remain good, with a steady market and limited 32s/36s.

Citrus

Lemons- Supplies are tight, quality is fair to good, demand is strong, and the market is increasing. Supplies will remain tight until volume has ramped up out D3 (peaking on 140/115/165) and D1 to start November.
Oranges- Supplies are tight, and rain has delayed harvesting. Quality is fair to good, demand is strong, and the market is increasing. Small sizes 88/113/138 will remain in short supply through the Valencia season, with some weeks having demand exceed supplies.
Limes- Supplies good, quality fair to good, demand fair to good, and the market is steady. Mexico has been experiencing heavy rains in various growing regions; quality could be impacted due these conditions.

Grapes

Rains in the San Joaquin Valley have created some quality issues for sure, mostly on the green varieties. Reds remain fair in quality, but we will see more quality issues in all grapes for the next few weeks.

Melons

Cantaloupe and Honeydew. Transition to the desert is underway this week with significant rain in both growing regions. Expect delays in loading and requests for sub sizing. Fruit will be cleaned as best as possible but be advised mud and dirt is unavoidable for all melons.

Strawberries

Heavy rain has put an end to Central Cal production. Southern Cal and Mexico new crop have also been hit with multiple days of rain. The forecast is clear going forward but it will take several days to recover. Shelf life will be limited. Prices are higher.
