Market Headlines

Beef

USDA reports that the newest case of New World Screwworm is less than 70 miles from the US-Mexico border. This is now the northernmost detection of NWS during this outbreak, and threatening to American cattle.

Turkey

Turkey supply remains very tight across the complex. Whole bird and Ready to Cook Turkey breasts are in high demand and are hard to find if you haven’t booked your holiday needs.

Dairy

The egg market is down across the board. California Jumbo, Extra-Large, and Large shell eggs are down. Medium shell eggs are down. The Block market is down. Butter is down. Cream remains readily available.

Grains / Oil

The soybean oil’s weekly average did show an increase last week. Canadian crop progress for Canola is good, and they have had recent good rains to help bring home the Canola crop. Local usage of palm oil has increased in Indonesia causing some market turmoil.

Produce Market Updates

Vegetables

Asparagus

Peruvian supply has tightened up and both west and east coast markets are trending higher. Supplies expected to improve the first week of October.

Bell Peppers

East – Supplies are abundant, quality is good to excellent, demand is fair to good, and the market is steady to lower. Red and Yellow peppers supplies good, quality fair to good, demand fair, and the market is steady to lower West – lighter supplies of green due to transition Demand is stronger and markets are steady to slightly higher.

Broccoli

Market is stronger with high demand; yields impacted with fluctuating temperatures and rain quality is fair.

Cauliflower

Market is trending higher due to weather affecting supply some shippers indicate they may need to watch averages.

Celery

Market is higher as supplies are tighter and increased demand. Quality is reported as good to very good.

Cilantro/Parsley

Market on parsley and cilantro is steady with good supplies. Quality reported as good on both.

Field Cucumbers

East – Supplies are good, quality is good, demand is fair to good, market is decreasing. West – Increased volume out of Mexico, market and demand are steady, quality is good.

Lettuce – Iceberg

Market continues to show strong activity due to weather and quality, yields are under budget with strong demand.

Lettuce Romaine

Market and supply on both romaine and hearts is steady. Quality is fair to good for both.

Onions

Yellow, red and white supplies are good. Idaho and Washington harvest continues. Quality is good in both areas. Good availability and lower demand has reduced prices in both areas.

Potatoes – Russets

Supplies are good on all sizes as harvest continues. This combined with lower demand has brought pricing down this week. Quality is good.

Squash

East – Supplies are plentiful on both yellow and zucchini squash, quality is good, demand is fair to good, and the market is decreasing. West-Good supplies of both zucchini and yellow squash, markets are steady to lower.

Tomatoes

Roma and round markets continue to improve due to increased availability and normal demand both east and west. Grape and cherry markets remain stable/unchanged vs previous week.

 

Fruit

Avocado

Supplies steady from all growing regions demand is fair to good, quality overall is good to excellent.

Citrus

Lemons- Supplies are tight; quality is fair to good, demand is strong, and the market is increasing. Supplies holding to averages, requesting extended lead time. Oranges- Supplies are tight, quality is fair to good, demand is strong, and the market is increasing. Demand exceeds supplies on 113s/138, supplies holding to averages. Limes- Supplies are good, quality good, demand good and the market lower. Markets have stabilized,. The crop has transitioned to the new production cycle, yielding small-sized fruit with improved coloring and shelf life.

Grapes

All grapes in great supply and very nice quality. Expecting that to continue for weeks to come.

Pineapple

Supplies are steady to tight; quality is fair to good, demand fair to good, and the market is steady to slightly lower. 7 ct remain tight as there has been some improvement on the other sizes.

Strawberries

Supplies have been lighter due to Central Cal winding down as well as high temps now compounded by up to ½ in. of rain. Southern Cal new crop is shipping but is not in full production. They are also expecting weather but not quite as bad as Central Cal. Prices are higher.
